The walks can be self guided or one can join one of the excellent trails lead by a qualified field guide. It is advisable to check that the reserve is open before planning a visit as during the winter months it can be closed due to fire hazard. Kloofendal Nature Reserve was founded on the site of the first payable gold mining operation of 1884 (this was prior to the main reefs being discovered). The old shafts have been restored and are national monuments, open to view. The wildlife is generally of the smaller variety, the main attraction being the pristine vegetation contained by the reserve. Walking trails traverse the area. The facility is also occasionally offered as a live music venue. It closes from May to September due to the high risk of veld (bush) fires during this time. No prior notification is required to gain access, which is free. Open Mon - Fri from 9am-5pm. Tel: 011-470-3639 (Parks board).
There is a bird hide at the small dam on the reserve and a while spent here can be well worth while. The wildlife on the reserve is restricted to smaller creatures but it is surprisingly varied. Many tree species have their home on the reserve. The reserve also is home to the geological site of Confidence Reef. This enclosed area can only be visited by special arrangement. Contact the reserve for more information.
