The Gauteng Branch of The South African Riding for the Disabled Association is part of a national body and is a registered non-profit organization that provides therapeutic horse riding to physically and mentally challenged children and young adults, irrespective of their race, creed or financial background. Disabilities include Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Down Syndrome, Autism, Quadraplegics, Paraplegics, Amputees, Foetal Alcohol Syndrome and genetic disorders. Our riders cannot just be “plonked” onto a pony - each rider is carefully assessed by a fully qualified Instructor, who holds an internationally recognized qualification, and is matched to the pony that will provide maximum benefit for the rider. A child may only be able to lay over the barrel of the pony when they begin but may, in time, be able to progress to sitting up; they may not be able to hold their head up without a neck brace, but can progress through ongoing core muscle development to riding without. Our ten special ponies also provide therapy through their non judgmental, kind and accepting natures which encourages self esteem and confidence - our riders may not be able to walk unaided, but can ride a pony. Most of our rider require three helpers - one to lead the pony and two to sidewalk and all our helpers are volunteers who give up their time. We rely solely on donations and our own fund raising endeavours. Office Hours : Tuesday to Friday 08h00 to 12h00
