Bohlokoa Studio produces unique, custom-made glass panels for doors, windows, cupboards and walls. The panels are build up in layers of slumped and fused glass, then completed with a final layer of paté de verre pieces. Each project is original in design and could not be repeated as the moulds for the final layer is once-off. Once the designs are approved to spesification, then the process of producing each panel starts. As this involves extensive firing time, this is a timeous process. On completion of each project once the pieces are put togehter, the magic of the glass and the vibrancy of colours combined with the dimensional pieces, makes a unique product. My recent work is a result of two years of fervent exploration within the medium of molten glass. I have an intense interest in the rich history of glass making and have drawn impartially from its long, rich and varied past. The skills acquired during this period have allowed me to have at my fingertips techniques that were inconceivable when I started out. Working in the relative isolation of South Africa, unencumbered by rigid parochial traditions of glass style and technique, has allowed me the freedom to develop my own style with layers of glass, dimensional pieces and air bubbles captured to give antoher life to the pieces. Being able to combine a technique from sixteenth-century Egypt, paté de verre, and combine it in an twentieth-century style is one of the greatest joys of being involved in the studio glass movement.
