We patrol the neighbourhood by car – 7 days a week. Each patroller uses his own car, but they collect the equipment from three of the petrol garages in the area. There are currently three routes (a predominantly Wilropark route, as well as two Roodekrans routes). The one group of patrollers collects the equipment from the Sasol garage on the corner of CR Swart and Mimosa Avenues. The Roodekrans patrollers collect the equipment from the Caltex garage on the corner of CR Swart and Ouklip Roads, and the third group from the Engen garage opposite Shop ‘n Bag Spar. Additional campaigns such as foot patrols or Police involvement may be planned in crime hot spot areas, if necessary. A crime prevention strategy for 2008-2010 was brainstormed by our members to tackle crime in the neighbourhood. Our crime prevention plan revolves around 5 goals: To establish proper co-ordination with the Police To increase our visibility To motivate and improve communication with members and patrollers To improve our operational efficiency To increase our membership to 1000+ According to the SAPS there has been a significant decline in crime since the patrols started. The SAPS director for Roodepoort, Eben McClaren thanked and praised the Neighbourhood Watch for their proactive role in reducing crime in the area. In other areas throughout South Africa, almost without exception, there has been a significant reduction in crime immediately after a blockwatch or neighbourhood watch has been established. The facts and statistics speak for themselves How many members do we have? The Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch currently has more than 300 members representing more than 90 streets in both Roodekrans and Wilropark. How many patrollers are there? There are currently 105 car patrollers patrolling Roodekrans and Wilropark seven days a week. Currently, about 90% of patrollers are men and 10% are women. We are also starting with foot patrols and the first 25 foot patrollers have already signed up.
