Johannesburg Water is a municipal entity owned by the City of Johannesburg mandated to provide water and sanitation services to the residents of Johannesburg. The entity supplies some 650 000 domestic, commercial and industrial customers and serves an estimated 3 million people. Johannesburg Water, the City's water and sanitation utility, has three laboratories that test between 400 and 500 samples each month, ensuring that what comes out of the taps meets the high quality requirements of the SABS 241 (2001) Drinking Water Standard. In keeping with its vision of becoming the best water utility in the country, Johannesburg Water is committed to improving services to the city's more than three million residents and establishing additional water connections in areas where these do not exist. To ensure the supply of quality water to consumers, Johannesburg Water maintains and operates 9 800 kilometres of water distribution pipes, 87 water reservoirs and 33 water towers. The utility operates six wastewater treatment works, with a combined process capacity of 900 mega litres per day, 38 sewer pumping stations and 9 600 kilometres of sewer pipelines, stretching from Midrand to Ennerdale. Johannesburg Water was established as an independent company with the City as sole shareholder in 2001. Its services are provided along business principles, ensuring customer satisfaction and cost recovery, and its testing laboratories are accredited with the South African National System, or Sanas, to maintain standards. The electro-mechanical maintenance department, located within the operations division, is responsible for ensuring that water towers, reservoirs and pump stations are functional 24 hours a day.
